Women's Weekend Preview

Women's Weekend Preview

The Avenir Sports All-Island Cup returns today, Saturday 23rd March, and Cork City FC Women travel to Ferrycarrig Park where they will face Wexford FC at 6pm. Both sides would have hoped for a more positive start to the season, Wexford have claimed a single point away top Shamrock Rovers from their opening two games, while City are yet to get off the mark following tough opening fixtures against Champions Peamount United and reigning All-Island Cup Champions Galway United.

Both City and Wexford lost out at the semi-final stage last season in a competition that buoyed both teams’ seasons. City topped their group with three successive victories against DLR Waves, Treaty United and Crusaders and manager Danny Murphy will be hoping the competition will offer the chance to bounce back from last week’s loss away to Galway United.

“Ultimately last week, we didn’t give a good account of ourselves. There was a lot of messing about prior to the game with the late switch to Tuam, but both teams had to deal with that, and we know we’re a better team than we showed last week. The team know they have more to give, and we as a staff trust them to deliver and we’ve seen their reaction after the game, they had their conversation as a group, and we know it hurts but they don’t want that to happen again, and they want to drive forward, and we’ll go to Wexford and challenge.”

WU17 Preview

Craig Robinson brings his WU17 Northeast to Greystones this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off away to Bray Wanderers, looking to maintain the excellent 100% start to the season. After the late postponement of last weekend’s home fixture against Wexford FC, the girls are back and eager to go. “Really looking forward to the game, all the players, all the coaches. Should be a great game and we’re looking to continue the positive start. Obviously, losing the game last weekend wasn’t ideal, but the girls have worked really hard this week and we’re going up with the intent on bringing home the three points and continue the winning run.”

WU19 Preview

Our WU19 have opened the season with another 100% record and manager Trish Fennelly-Hunt will be looking to extend the unbeaten run tomorrow, Sunday 24th, against the admittedly tougher task of Wexford FC away, another team who have had a perfect start to the season. “Really looking forward to Sunday after the positive result last week, the girls have worked really hard in training and we know Wexford will be a tough test, especially in Ferrycarrig with the extra bit of travel. But it will be a very competitive game, looking forward to seeing the football that the girls can play. We’ve prepared well and confidence is high. Can’t wait to get going.”
