Cork City 1-0 Wexford Youths
Cork City made it three wins on the bounce with a familiar Graham Cummins goal giving the Leesiders the victory tonight at Turner’s Cross.
George O’Callaghan started the game on the bench, with Billy Woods coming in for the City number 10.
The first effort on goal in a drab opening first half fell to Shane Barrett after around 20 minutes. He picked up the ball inside the box and turned and shot but the ball rolled into the hands of Pa Holden. Anthony Wolfe had the visitor’s best chance at taking the lead, a long range effort was parried by Mark McNulty but was eventually cleared.
Greg O’Halloran’s cross found the head of Graham Cummins shortly before the interval, but Holden was alert to get a finger-tip save and denied the league’s top marks-man. Cummins however did find the back of the net moments later, Wood’s cross was pin-point accurate and another header from Cummins increased his season tally to 16.
The second half was a lacklustre affair, Barrett shooting over the bar just on the hour mark which ended a stale opening fifteen minutes. Gavin Kavanagh pulled out all the stops to keep his side a goal up, Danny Furlong raced through on goal and just when an equaliser looked certain, the Dublin man pulled off an excellent last ditch tackle to concede a corner.
Youths didn’t muster up any major threat in the latter stages, and City held out for all three points.
