Cork City 1-1 Bohemians

Tommy_Dunne_2012

There was late heartbreak for Cork City on Sunday evening as an added time penalty kick saw Bohemians snatch an unlikely League point at Turner’s Cross.

The home side looked on course for victory thanks to Daryl Horgan’s first-half strike until substitute Kevin Murray was judged to have bundled Derek Pender over in the box, and it was Keith Ward that smashed the spot kick beyond Mark McNulty to draw the sides level.

Tommy Dunne made one change to his starting XI – Davin O’Neill replacing Tadhg Purcell, who has returned to England following the end of his loan spell on Leeside. The Dubliner’s opposite number Aaron Callaghan, however, made eight changes to the Bohs side that had been in Europa League action against Iceland’s Thor Akureyri on Thursday night.

The hosts –unbeaten in eight League outings going into the fixture – started brightly and had several chances to go in front before Horgan finally broke the deadlock on 23 minutes.

The assist will go to Gearóid Morrissey, who collected the ball in his own area before surging forward and finding Horgan lurking with intent. The winger beat the attention of Pender before his low shot dribbled between the legs of Andy McNulty – much to the delight of the 2,700-strong home crowd.

Horgan came closest to a second before the interval, curling in a great ball in from the edge of the area. However, it was just the right height for Andy McNulty to gather on this occasion.

O’Neill, Vinny Sullivan and Horgan all had chances to extend City’s lead in the second half but Dunne’s men were dealt a blow with 20 minutes remaining as injuries to both Morrissey and Dunleavy forced the pair off in a short spell of time – giving their youthful opponents the spur needed to edge a little further forward.

The visitors, for their part, looked a far more organised outfit after the half-time interval, though they failed to create enough up front to threat Mark McNulty’s goal – Michael Barker’s effort creating the Dubliners’ best chance of the game with 14 minutes remaining.

Bohemians would get their lucky break in injury time, however – referee Derek Tomney deciding that Murray’s challenge was robust and after he pointed to the spot, Ward blasted home to secure his team a precious point.
