The home side looked to get started early as, 10 minutes in, Sean Maguire drew a fingertip save from Ciaran Nugent in the Galway goal.
The Leesiders had the lead on the quarter hour mark, with the goal coming from Maguire, who looked in the mood right from the first whistle. A defensive mix up saw Maguire pounce on the ball, before flicking it around the keeper and running on to it, then calmly finishing into the empty net.
Following the goal the visitors looked to hit back, but the home side absorbed the pressure with ease. Once they regained possession, City looked composed as the stroked the ball around.
Maguire had another chance on the half hour mark. A Kevin O’Connor free kick was chipped over the wall into the path of Maguire, who caught it clean on the volley, but the shot was straight at Nugent.
City had one more chance before the interval, but Stephen Dooley pulled the shot wide.
The Leesiders got their much sought second goal 52 minutes in. A Dooley cross from the right hand side found the head of Ryan Delaney, who steered the header past Nugent from the edge of the penalty area.
The Home side were in the ascendancy following the second goal and they continued to control possession. They got their third in the 64th minute. Greg Bolger nicked the ball in midfield and played it into the feet of Jimmy Keohane. Keohane then flicked the ball on to Dooley who deftly chipped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.
City weathered a minor Galway fightback, as they looked to get a consolation, before getting their forth goal in the final minute of additional time. Substitute Conor Ellis was played through and he took one touch before driving a low, accurate shot past Nugent into the far corner.
