Cork City made it seven wins out of seven tonight following a comfortable victory over Limerick in the season’s first Munster Derby at Markets Field. Seán Maguire opened the scoring midway through the first half, with Garry Buckley doubling City’s lead before half time. Gearóid Morrissey spectacular effort just after the break sealed all three points.

John Caulfield’s starting eleven was unchanged from the one that beat Dundalk six days prior.

Limerick had the first clear chance of the game. Rodrigo Tosi has been the Shannon-sider’s main goal threat this season and he saw his header go just wide of the post.  City shifted gears and piled on the pressure and to no surprise, Seán Maguire broke the deadlock. Stephen Dooley’s pass found the league’s top scorer and he made no mistake to finish past Brendan Clarke.

It should have been three nil within the next ten minutes. First Maguire uncharacteristically scuppered a glorious chance by missing with the goal at his mercy, before Dooley was denied by the crossbar. It seemed that the second goal was inevitable. Buckley doubled City’s lead when he got on the end of Dooley’s cross and slotted the ball home at the back post from a tight angle.

Former Cork City striker John O’Flynn was introduced at half time for Limerick as part of a double substitution. Limerick’s strategy didn’t pay off. Gearóid Morrissey took advantage of a disoriented Limerick defence and fired home from 20 yards out to seal all three points.

The Leesider’s introduced Christian Nanetti to League of Ireland football late on. Connor Ellis also came off the bench to threaten the Limerick goal, but a fourth goal was not to be.

City now lie top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table with seven wins and 21 points. Next up for the Rebel Army is the visit of Derry City to Turner’s Cross next Friday night.
