There was late disappointment for Cork City, as they exited the EA Sports Cup thanks to a James Doona goal at the very end of extra time.

With penalties seemingly looming City, down to ten men since ten minutes before half time, were undone as the Rovers substitute smashed the ball past Mark McNulty to book his side a place in the final.

City had started the evening brightly and looked the more likely to make a breakthrough with Connor Ellis keeping the home defence on their toes. The home side came into it more as the half wore on and McNulty made a good save from Shaw just before the half hour.

Then came the turning point in the game as, on 35 minutes, a City free into the box led to loud appeals for a handball but a corner was awarded. From the resulting set piece, Alan Bennett was shown a straight red card after a coming together with a Rovers defender.

Unsurprisingly, the home side sought to press home their numerical advantage once the second half got underway. On 52 minutes, McNulty pulled off a superb save to tip a piledriver from Finn onto the post.

Rovers were dominating possession, with City seeking to hit them on the counter, but the Dublin side were struggling to penetrate a well-organised City defence.  They finally got in behind on 71 minutes through Miele but he dragged his shot wide of the post.

McNulty was in action again with two minutes left on the clock, as he raced out to block after a scramble in the box, with that proving to be the final chance in normal time.

Midway through the first period of extra time, Gearóid Morrissey did brilliantly to win possession and find Karl Sheppard who bore down on goal but he dragged his shot across the keeper and wide of the far post. McNulty was called into action again with just over a minute to go, but Rovers would create one more chance and that proved to be decisive, as Doona found the back of the net.
