2017 double-winners Cork City take on near neighbours Cobh Ramblers in their first game of 2018.
City make the short trip to St. Colman’s Park on Saturday, with kick-off set for 2 pm.
Speaking ahead of the game, City boss John Caulfield reflected on his side’s first week back in pre-season training: “The lads came back in great shape; despite the weather, the attitude has been fantastic and the fitness levels are good. We are integrating the new players, which is what the first week back is always about, and the atmosphere in the group has been very good. They’ve had a hard week, but we are very happy.”
“The league starting earlier this year, and January and February are always the worst two months weather-wise, so we just have to adapt. We are looking forward to the Cobh game now; the ground will be heavy but it is a local derby and a game that is always competitive. For our supporters, it is a first chance to see some of the players, so I am sure everyone is looking forward to it.”
“We hope to give most of the players a run; at this time of year, it is always about giving them game time and getting match fitness levels up. We are trying to play at least one game a week, sometimes two, between now and the start of the season. We are training every day, doing double sessions, and everyone is looking forward to getting going.”
