Cork City are into the semi-finals of the Munster Senior Cup following a 4-0 win against St. Mary’s in Mayfield tonight.
In a game played in cold and windy conditions, City dominated possession but found a well-drilled St. Mary’s side difficult to break down.
Sean Maguire was the first to threaten, as he saw his deflected effort parried away for a a corner just before the quarter hour. Greg Bolger was the next to take aim, with a corner again resulting from his well-struck effort on 20 minutes.
The opening goal came on 27 minutes, as Jimmy Keohane marked his first competitive appearance for the club with a smart header after good work by John Kavanagh and Conor McCormack. The remainder of the opening half saw City probe for a second, but St. Mary’s held firm.
The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first had ended, and City doubled their lead on 65 minutes as a cross into the box resulted in a Cian Murphy own goal. The tie was effectively over as a contest at that point, but there was more to come from City.
On 76 minutes, the crowd were treated to the goal of the night, as Sean Maguire showed great control to beat several defenders and fire an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. The fourth and final goal saw Maguire turn provider, as he picked out substitute Achille Campion with a lovely pass and the French striker marked his City debut with a tidy finish low into the corner.
