Cork City made it three wins from three, as they cruised to victory over ten man Drogheda United this evening.
City started the game brightly and it came as little surprise when they hit the front after 7 minutes; a corner was only half-cleared and Gearóid Morrissey headed it back in for Seán Maguire to find the net with a smart header.
As John Caulfield’s side probed for a second, their good work was undone as Drogheda levelled from a corner. After a corner was not properly dealt with, the ball was returned into the six yard box and Elliott flicked home from close range.
The home side were then dealt a blow, as Purdy was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Steven Beattie on 19 minutes. City made the numerical advantage count just before the interval, as Morrissey finished smartly from Beattie’s corner.
The second half was barely 5 minutes old when Karl Sheppard added City’s third, a goal which effectively sealed the contest. Again, it was a corner that set the scene for the strike, as Sheppard found the net with a smart volley after O’Connor’s set piece had been punched out to him on the edge of the box.
City were dominant now, and they continued to create chances but were unable to add a fourth until right at the death. For the second week in a row, Achille Campion came off the bench to feed a find pass to strike partner Connor Ellis, who turned and fired smartly to the back of the net.
Next up for City is the visit of Sligo Rovers to Turner’s Cross on Monday night.
Referee: Derek Tomney.
