Cork City made it a club record nine wins from nine tonight, as they defeated Bohemians 2-0.
The home side had the better of the opening exchanges, with Mark McNulty needing to be alert to tip an Oscar Brennan strike over the bar inside ten minutes. City responded, and Bohs keeper Supple was off his line smartly to clear at the feet of Maguire just two minutes later.
Whilst the home side were having the better of things, City were gaining a foothold in the game and they took the lead five minutes before the break thanks to a superb goal by Karl Sheppard; a corner was cleared to the edge of the box and the striker met it with a first time volley which guided the ball into the top corner.
City were dealt a blow early in the second half as Jimmy Keohane was forced off through injury to be replaced by Steven Beattie. Mark McNulty had to be at his best to deny Bohs an equaliser, as Poynton raced through but the keeper raced out to deny him on 56 minutes.
Midway through the half, the ball broken kindly for Sheppard but the striker, cutting in from the right, dragged his shot narrowly wide of the far post. Into the closing stages, the home side attempted to pin City back but John Caulfield’s men still looked a real threat on the break.
With six minutes left, a lightening counter by the away side saw Sheppard cut the ball back to Garry Buckley who was denied by a fine save from Supple. Buckley made no mistake 5 minutes later though, as great work from Maguire found the midfielder running into the box and his first time finish sealed the points for his side.
Referee: Ben Connolly.
