Cork City booked their place in the next round of the EA Sports Cup after a comfortable win away to Limerick.
City started the game well and, after dominating possession in the opening stages, came within inches of the lead when Connor Ellis fired just over on the quarter hour. Steven Beattie then saw his goalbound effort blocked, as City cranked up the pressure.
They made the breakthrough on 22 minutes when, after an incredible goalmouth scramble, the ball was cleared as far as Beattie, who’s cross was headed home by Garry Buckley. The home side came into the game more as the half wore on, but it was City who had the better of things at the interval.
Limerick went into the second half aiming to level matters and they had a chance ten minutes after the break, as the ball fell for Stephen Kenny but he fired straight at McNulty.
On the hour, City doubled their advantage; Shane Tracey and Alec Byrne contested Stephen Dooley’s corner and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Five minutes later, and City put the tie beyond doubt, thanks to a fine individual goal by Shane Griffin; the full back showing a fine touch to burst clear of the Limerick defence and finish calmly.
With the result secured, City closed the game out and now look forward to Friday’s trip to Inchicore to face St. Patrick’s Athletic.
The quarter finals of the EA Sports cup will take place on May 1st/2nd. Stay tuned to CorkCityFC.ie for up-to-date news on our opponent and confirmed date.
