About FORAS

Cork City Football Club is entirely owned and operated by the Friends of the Rebel Army Society (FORAS) supporters trust. Supporters and friends of Cork City FC can purchase a share in the trust in return for an annual payment of €120 a year or €10 a month.

Initially conceived as a vehicle that would allow Cork City supporters give meaningful and long-term support to their football club, the trust was officially launched in 2008 and immediately played a crucial role in steering Cork City FC through an examinership period of several months.

Wary of what the future might bring, the trust’s members voted and agreed to apply for a licence to participate in the 2010 Airtricity League First Division season and on the eve of the new term – once it became clear that Cork City Football Club’s holding company would be liquidated by the courts – Cork City FORAS Co-op was born.

Within months, the trust reclaimed the name Cork City FC and other assets for its rightful owners – the club’s supporters and the people of Cork – all while supporting the underage sides that had continued to proudly represent Cork City FC with distinction throughout 2011.

Today the trust is run by a Board of Management, which is elected from its membership. New trustees join the Board each year and the group works closely with the club’s staff to ensure that daily operations abide by the core tenants of sustainability, community and volunteerism.

What is FORAS?

In our native tongue ‘forás’ means development or evolution. Legally, the Friends of the Rebel Army Society Ltd. is an Industrial and Provident Society. Based on advice from Supporters Direct in the UK and following discussions with a number of successful trusts, it was decided to form a limited company – specifically one that follows the same model in Ireland as our local Credit Unions or any of the other co-operatives around the country.

FORAS is registered in Ireland with the Registrar of Friendly Societies and is bound by Irish company law. A yearly financial report is presented to and released to trustees each year at the trust’s AGM and all trustees over the age of 16 have voting rights on all aspect’s of the Society’s business. The trust’s Society Rules are available here.
