Cork City midfielder Gearóid Morrissey has been called up to a home based Under 21 squad of 18 players who will take on Gerry Smith’s amateur side on Saturday 20th November 2010 at 14.00hrs in the AUL Complex. Morrissey becomes the fourth Cork city player to receive an international call-up this season, following Stephen Mulcahy, Graham Cummins and Shane Duggan, all of whom featured for the Under 23 side.
Republic of Ireland Under 21 Manager Noel King said: “”We have organised this game so that I can have a look first hand at the home based players who qualify for Ireland Under 21’s. We don’t have competitive Under 21 games until next year so I want to use this time to speak with the players and to collect as much information as I can to build the strongest squad possible. I could have brought a squad of 30 in but I want to give these players a chance and we have plenty of time to see all the players on our list over the next few months. I would love to see one, two, or any number of home based players do the business and force their way into the squad and this is their chance.”
Cork City boss Tommy Dunne said: “I’m delighted for Gearóid, this call-up is testament to all of the hard work he has put in over recent months. He was struggling with injury when he joined us, but he has worked very hard to regain his fitness and did well when he came into the side towards the season. Gearóid is a player with excellent potential, and I am delighted that he recently signed a new contract, as I believe he will continue to progress and will be an important player for us next season.”
