While the conditions made it heavy going at times in Bishopstown on Sunday, the Under 19’s managed to claim a valuable three points against a defensively minded Drogehda outfit.
Despite the Louth side’s defensive make up, a superb diving header from Conor Ellis gave the Bantry native his first goal for the club after Ryan Downeys excellent centre on 38 minutes. It was a deserved lead for the home side after both Darren Murphy and Greg Harte had come closest to breaking the deadlock in a scrappy first half not aided by a heavy surface and deteriorating weather conditions.
Darren Murphy added the side’s second goal with just eight minutes remaining in the match. Greg Harte’s left wing cross was found the City skipper in space in the area and despite his first effort being blocked by the Drogheda ‘keeper, Murphy showed persistence to finish the rebound from eight yards and give the home side a deserved win for their endeavours.
Next weekend will see the side travel to Tallaght to take on Shanrock Rovers in defence of their Enda McGuill Cup. Kick off on Saturday is down for 2pm.
