Longford 1-4 CCFC

Cork City advanced to the semi-finals of the FAI Cup tonight after a 4-1 win over Longford Town at City Calling Stadium.

Karl Sheppard (2), Kieran Sadlier and Jimmy Keohane gave City a 4-0 lead, while an unfortunate own goal from Robbie Williams gave the home side a consolation. City will join Limerick, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers in the semi-finals draw on Monday.

John Caulfield made four changes to the side that started against Shamrock Rovers last week. Stephen Dooley returned from injury, with Robbie Williams, Greg Bolger and Conor McCarthy coming in for Steven Beattie, Alan Bennett, Conor McCormack and Garry Buckley.

City controlled the opening stages of the game, showing their seniority over a youthful Longford Town outfit. Sadlier continued his FAI Cup scoring streak by giving the away side the lead inside the opening 24 minutes. Shane Griffin’s short corner found Sadlier and his shot from a tight again flew into the back of the net.

The Leesiders doubled their lead moments later. Griffin again the provider, this time assisting Keohane who fired past Jack Brady in the Longford goal.

The game was effectively over as a contest just before the break. Bolger’s through-ball wasn’t cut out and Sheppard found himself clear through on goal but he was brought down in the box by Brady. Sheppard himself stepped up to take the penalty, making no mistake to put City ahead by three goals at half time.

With Dooley just back from injury, Caulfield introduced Connor Ellis as a half time substitute. He immediately made an impact, playing Sheppard in on goal and he confidently finished the move to score his second of the game.

Longford did get a consolation midway through the second half. Robbie William’s sliced his attempted clearance of Peter Hopkin’s cross, and the ball unfortunately found it’s way into Mark McNulty’s goal. Williams turned to saviour shortly after with an important block to deny Davy O’Sullivan.

Referee: Derek Tomney.

Attendance: 910.
