WNL: Cork City 0-5 Peamount United

Cork City suffered a 5-0 defeat on Sunday as an Aine O’Gorman hat-trick and goals from Heather Payne and Eleanor Ryan Doyle was enough to beat City in the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League at Bishopstown.

City had the brightest start as Christina Dring set up Michelle O’Driscoll in the first minute but her effort went just to the left of the post and wide. City were made to pay for missing that chance as Peamount scored two goals in two minutes as first Heather Payne scores after a pullback from Niamh Farrelly in the 4th minute. Two minutes later Aine O’Gorman made it 2-0 as she scored from the edge of the box.

Saoirse Noonan came close to getting City back in the game as sent a free kick just wide of the post in the 16th minute. Peamount made it 3-0 in the 36th minute as Heather Payne sent a great ball for Aine O’Gorman who beat Amanda Budden to score her second of the day. Michelle O’Driscoll came close to getting one back before half time after some great work from Saoirse to set the chance up but she couldn’t get past Niamh Reid Burke in the Peamount goal.

City brought on Hannah O’Donoghue for Mary Barrett. Peamount made it 4-0 after a cross into the City box found the head of Eleanor Ryan Doyle who headed it home. Saoirse Noonan again came close as she forced a great save from a free kick which was headed into the top right corner of the goal. Peamount made it 5-0 as Aine O’Gorman finished her hat-trick in the 69th minute.

City brought on Eadaoin Lyons for Michelle O’Driscoll and Amy McCormack for Kate O’Donovan. Danielle Sheehy came close to scoring in the 79th minute but her effort was just wide. Amanda Budden made two great saves from two Peamount corners while Hannah O’Donoghue made a great run from left back and came close with an effort but was saved and it finished 5-0 to Peamount United.

City are back in action next Sunday 20th of May at Bishopstown as they host Galway United WFC with a 2pm kick off.
