Women’s FAI Cup: Manulla 0-8 CCFC

Cork City began their defence of the Continental Tyre’s Women’s FAI Cup in the ideal fashion with an 8-0 win against Manulla FC on Sunday thanks to goals from Maggie Duncliffe, Savannah McCarthy, Danielle Burke and 2 goals from Nathalie O’Brien and Hannah O’Donoghue.

City began the game strongly having the ball in the net early on only to be ruled out for offside however City were not to be denied for long as they took the lead in the 19th minute through Nathalie O’Brien, the ball broke loose on the left hand edge of the box and O’Brien struck it home to give City a 1-0 lead. City quickly made it two as Eadaoin Lyons was fouled inside the penalty area, Maggie Duncliffe stepped up and scored the resulting penalty to give City a 2-0 lead.

City continued to pile on the pressure and soon had a third with Savannah McCarthy heading home a Nathalie O’Brien corner. Nathalie O’Brien scored her second goal of the game to make it 4-0 a good strike from distance which appeared to take a slight deflection on its way in wrong footing the goalkeeper. City had 5 before half time as the ball went into the net off a Manulla defender after Eadaoin Lyons had gotten behind the defence and sent a great first time cross in.

City made two changes for the second half bringing on Amanda Budden for Eve Badana and Rachel O’Regan making her senior debut for the club for Ciara McNamara. In the second half City continued where they left off from the first half with Danielle Burke making it 6-0 after winning the ball and drove into the box striking it home with a good left footed strike. Hannah O’Donoghue made it 7-0 beating the offside trap to receive a great pass from Savannah McCarthy sliding the finish under the goalkeeper. City had another debut when Megan Sheehan replaced Christina Dring. Hannah O’Donoghue finished the scoring when she cut in from the left wing driving the ball into the top corner.
