Cork City are into the final of the Continental Tyres Women’s National League Shield after a 3-0 win courtesy of first half goals from Savannah McCarthy, Hannah O’Donoghue and Christina Dring.
City started the stronger of the two sides with an early chance to take the lead coming in the 7th minute as Katie McCarthy had an effort from the edge of the box which went just wide. City however did not have to wait long for the opening goal as a minute later Savannah McCarthy headed home from a Maggie Duncliffe corner to give City a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later City doubled their lead as Saoirse Noonan flicked the ball into the path of Hannah O’Donoghue who chipped Naoisha McAloon in the Peamount goal to give City a two goal lead early on. Peamount started to get into the game and Eve Badana had to be alert to deny Amber Barrett. Badana was again on hand to save Eleanor Ryan Doyle’s header in the 17th minute.
City nearly made it three in the 25th minute as Saoirse Noonan had a headed effort on goal which was tipped over the bar by McAloon. City did make it three in the 37th minute as a Zara Foley cross from the right edge of the penalty area found Christina Dring who headed home well to make it 3-0.
Peamount began the second half strongly trying to get back into the game and put pressure on the City defence. Eve Badana had to be alert to deny Eleanor Ryan Doyle in the 52nd minute. At the other end Saoirse Noonan came close when she scooped the ball over McAloon only to be denied by a Peamount defender.
Peamount continued to put pressure on the City defence but City were dangerous on the counter and Hannah O’Donoghue came close from the edge of the box. Nathalie O’Brien replaced Christina Dring on 75 minutes to make her 100th competitive appearance for the club. Peamount continued to pressure the City defence but they held strong and the game finished 3-0 with City going into the final.
