WNL: Shelbourne 2-0 Cork City

Cork City fell to a 2-0 defeat in their latest Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League match against Shelbourne LFC at the AUL Grounds today.

Shelbourne started the game the stronger of the two sides and this pressure eventually told in the 17th minute as Noelle Murray with a shot which found the bottom right corner beat Maria O’Sullivan in the City goal. Shelbourne continued to have much of the play but City started to get themselves into the match as Saoirse Noonan set up Eabha O’Mahony but her effort went over the bar.

A Savannah McCarthy free kick eventually found its way to Saoirse Noonan whose effort went over the bar. Maria O’Sullivan was forced into a fingertip save to deny Murray just managing to put the ball over the bar. At the other end Saoirse Noonan took advantage of a mix-up in the Shelbourne defence to get a shot away from distance but couldn’t find the target.

City started the better in the second half as Savannah McCarthy found Saoirse Noonan with a good pass but her effort went just over the crossbar. Savannah McCarthy came close herself with a free kick which struck the side netting.  Saoirse Noonan found Zara Foley with a good long pass but she couldn’t keep her shot down and it went just over the bar.

Shelbourne however remained dangerous and made it 2-0 in the 66th minute as Malinda Allen scored with a powerful strike. City continued to try and get back into the match and Saoirse Noonan came very close on the counter attack but her shot went narrowly over the bar. City continued to push but ultimately were unable to truly test the Shelbourne goalkeeper and the match finished

Next up for City is the Women’s National League Shield Final against Wexford Youths WFC which will take place on October 7 at Turner’s Cross with a 3pm kick off.
