Cork City fell to a 9-1 defeat to Peamount United in their last Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League game of the 2018 season at Bishopstown on Sunday.
Peamount started what was a dominant first half display quickly with the opening goal in the third minute as Megan Smyth-Lynch found the net directly from a corner to give the FAI Cup finalists an early 1-0 lead. They quickly doubled their lead in the 7th minute as Amber Barrett scored from distance beating Eve Badana with a shot from left side of the penalty box. Dearbhile Beirne made it three a minute later as she got the final touch in a scramble inside the six yard box to tap it home and make it 3-0.
Peamount continued to be first to every ball and pressed the City defence as Megan Smyth-Lynch intercepted a pass deep inside the City half and set up Amber Barrett to have the easiest of chances to make it 4-0. Barrett completed her hat-trick in the 30th minute as she was played in and made it 5-0. Karen Duggan made it six as she scored with an effort from the edge of the box in the 38th minute.
The second half continued much as it had in the first with Peamount dominating possession and territory pressing the City defence and quickly made it 7 thanks to Elanor Ryan Doyle. City managed to pull one back as Katie McCarthy sent Rachel O’Regan through and she finished well to make it 7-1. Peamount however were quick to respond and score an 8th goal as they caught City on the counter attack with Aine O’Gorman scoring. Aine O’Gorman finished the scoring in the 69th minute with her second and Peamount’s 9th and the game finished 9-1.
