Cork City FC are delighted to announce that John Kavanagh has signed a new contract with the club.
The full back told spent most of season out on loan, having returned after a lengthy absence through injury and he told CorkCityFC.ie: “I can’t wait to get going, I am really looking forward to it. Last year, I was away at Waterford and then at Finn Harps, and I feel as though I am in a really good position to come in, compete and stake a claim.”
“I think I needed to play Premier Division football last year, for myself, just to know that I can do it, and I think I proved that. I played close to 30 games, so I think I am in a much better position this year than last year, and I can’t wait to get going.”
“There’s a great bunch of lads at Finn Harps; they’ll be a great addition to the Premier Division and it was great to finish the season on a high with them. At any big club, there will be competition for places and it is no different here, but I am looking forward to the challenge.”
City boss John Caulfield commented on the news, saying: “I think this is like a new signing for us. Kav has had a horrendous number of years, but last season was significant for him. He played on loan with Waterford and Finn Harps and he trained regularly with us here as well. He has overcome his injuries, he is in brilliant condition and he has come back into training now looking in tremendous condition.”
“Some players would have walked away, but he has shown dedication and a great attitude, and he has come through it. I think the supporters will see that he is the John Kavanagh of old, but probably with a wiser head!”
“He has thirty games under his belt from last season and has come through that with flying colours. Mentally, he has overcome the injury and hasn’t broken down, so I think he is over it and we are looking forward to him hitting the ground running, which I am sure he will do this year.”
