WNL: DLR Waves 0-3 CCFC

Cork City made it two wins in a row thanks to goals from Katie McCarthy, Lauren Egbuloniu and Christina Dring as they beat DLR Waves 3-0 at Jackson Park on Saturday in their latest Só Hotels Women’s National League game.

Decked out in black, City almost got off to the perfect start in the 5th minute as Maggie Duncliffe making her 100th appearance for the club who had an effort from distance crash off the crossbar before being gathered by DLR Waves goalkeeper Erica Turner. City however would take an early lead as in the 12th minute Katie McCarthy passed the ball wide to Éabha O’Mahony who put in a cross which McCarthy reached the end of after continuing her run and volleyed home to give City a 1-0 lead.

City almost made it two very quickly as in the 15th minute Éabha O’Mahony got the ball in the box but her shot went just over the bar. The rest of the first half was one of few chances as both sides struggled to create much in the way of chances, City did come close again to doubling their lead in the 44th minute as Lauren Egbuloniu managed to power past the DLR Waves defence but her shot was straight at the goalkeeper and the half finished 1-0 to City.

City doubled their lead early in the second half as in the 54th minute Lauren Egbuloniu beat the offside trap running behind the DLR Waves defence and finished low to score her first senior goal for the club and make it 2-0 to City. City brought on Shauna McCarthy for Eadaoin Lyons and Saoirse Noonan for Lauren Egbuloniu. Cork City goalkeeper Maria O’Sullivan had to be alert to deny a Kerri Letmon effort in the 76th minute.

Saoirse Noonan almost marked her return from injury with a goal as she was found by a Katie McCarthy pass but her effort was blocked by the DLR Waves defence. City brought on Christina Dring for Éabha O’Mahony and minutes later she made it 3-0 as in the 88th minute as she finished from close range and City finished the match 3-0.

Next up for City is a trip to Markets Field to face Limerick WFC on Sunday 21st of April.
