Cork City return to Só Hotels Women’s National League action as they again host Shelbourne FC this Sunday, May 5 at Bishopstown (KO 2pm)
Shelbourne ran out 3-1 winners in the Women’s National League Cup last Sunday but City will be looking to even the scores and return to winning ways this time around.
Cork City Manager Rónán Collins spoke ahead of the match on the challenge of facing the same opposition twice in a row: “The girls are bringing a higher level of training each week and that work is showing all the time. We were disappointed with some of our aspects of play last weekend and know we can execute them much better. It’s always interesting playing the same opposition back to back because we both go away with ideas of what to work on during the week for the rematch.”
He continued: “It was a good game of football last week and that should all add to the interest this week. Shelbourne kept possession and moved the ball well, but we created some good chances – we need to keep creating them and capitalise on them. Again, another test for the squad this week with a good few players out and a great opportunity for players to stake a claim.”
Cork City defender Ciara McNamara spoke ahead of the game: “Last Sunday’s result was disappointing for us especially after gathering a bit of momentum in recent weeks. On a positive note it was great to see Saoirse back on the scoresheet; hopefully, one of many goals to come this season for her. I am confident that if we apply ourselves well on the pitch on Sunday, we can come away with a positive result. Training has been really good with all the squad putting in great work to rectify the mistakes from last week.”
City will be missing Lauren Egbuloniu, Maria O’Sullivan and Savannah McCarthy for the game against Shelbourne, while Eve Badana, Saoirse Noonan, Stacey Paul O’Regan are unavailable for selection.
