WNL: CCFC 7-1 Kilkenny

Cork City ran out 7-1 winners as they beat Kilkenny United in the Só Hotels Women’s National League at Bishopstown on Sunday.

City got off to the perfect start as they opened the scoring in the 3rd minute after Christina Dring set up Zara Foley to finish from the edge of the box. City dominated the early exchanges with chances from Christina Dring and Riona Crowley coming close for city to double their advantage while the closest chance came from a spectacular shot from Danielle Burke which was just saved and put out for a corner. From the resulting corner City doubled their lead when the ball came to Ciara McNamara who volleyed the ball through a crowded penalty area to make it 2-0 to City.

City scored their third in the 25th minute when Eabha O’Mahony sent Christina Dring through where she rounded the goalkeeper and finished into the empty net. City continued to press the Kilkenny defence coming close with a free kick from Maggie Duncliffe and an effort inside the box from Eabha O’Mahony. City scored their fourth in the 40th minute when Riona Crowley found Katie McCarthy on the right edge of the box where she finished to make it 4-0. Kilkenny kept the game alive when City failed to clear their lines and Emma Campbel took advantage to make it 4-1 at half time.

City continued to dominate the second half coming close from Saoirse Noonan and Christina Dring. Megan Sheehan who came on for Christina Dring playing her final game for the club scored the 5th goal in the 70th minute from the edge of the box chipping the goalkeeper after being set up by Maggie Duncliffe.  Saoirse Noonan made it 6 after good build up play between Megan Sheehan and Katie McCarthy set her up and she finished. Noonan again finished off the game with the 7th with a strong shot from the edge of the box and the game finished 7-1.

Next up for City is a trip to Eamonn Deacy Park to face Galway next Saturday with a 6pm kick off.
