Cork City fell to a 4-1 defeat at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday against Galway WFC in the Só Hotels Women’s National League.
Galway dominated the early exchanges and got their reward for this dominance in the 12th minute when Chloe Singleton applied the finishing touch to a good Galway move. While the rest of the first half lacked in chances Galway continued to dominate much of the play but City came more into the game as the half went on without really testing the Galway goalkeeper and the half finished 1-0 to Galway.
City brought on Saoirse Noonan for Riona Crowley for the second half. Early into the second half Galway were denied a second goal after a fantastic save by Maria O’Sullivan to keep the score at 1-0. City had a chance to equalise on the hour mark when they were awarded a penalty, Saoirse Noonan stepped up to take the spot kick but her shot hit the post and it remained 1-0. Noonan however would make up for the missed chance a few minutes later when she sent the ball across the box to set up Rachel O’Regan who fired it home to make it 1-1.
Galway however regained their grip on the game when in the 70th minute Méabh De Búrca struck with a great strike from distance just beating Maria O’Sullivan to make it 2-1 to Galway. This marked a prolific 10 minutes for Galway as they again struck in the 73rd minute when Mckenna Doyle struck with another good strike for Galway to make it 3-1. They finished off the game in the 79th minute when Mckenna Doyle struck again to finish off a good Galway move and the game finished 4-1 to Galway.
Next up for City is a trip to Greenogue in Dublin next Saturday 3rd of August to face Peamount United with a 6.30pm kick off.
