FAI Women’s Cup: CCFC 2-3 Shelbourne

Cork City have exited the Só Hotels FAI Women’s Senior Cup after falling to a 3-2 defeat to Shelbourne on Sunday at Bishopstown.

Shelbourne started the stronger of the two sides and took the lead in the 12th minute when Rebecca Cooke put it home from the edge of the box after a swift Shelbourne attack. They nearly made it 2-0 but for a fine double save from Maria O’Sullivan to deny them in the 15th minute. City equalised in the 19th minute after good work from Christina Dring found Sophie Liston on the right wing and she returned the favour putting in a perfect cross for Dring to head home and bring the sides level.

City grew in confidence from this and in the 27th took the lead, Saoirse Noonan passing to Christina Dring who put the ball in for Eabha O’Mahony to score from a tight angle to give City a 2-1 lead. City continued to push for another goal and came close after Zara Foley had an effort only to go just over the bar. Shelbourne equalised in the 39th minute when a defensive mix-up let Alex Kavanagh put home from close range to make it 2-2. City had a chance to retake the lead before half time with a free kick from Saoirse Noonan which went just over the crossbar and the half finished 2-2.

City started the second half strong and nearly retook the lead in the 50th minute after a good team move set up Eabha O’Mahony who struck the post and the ball fell to Zara Foley who fired her shot over the bar. Shelbourne took the lead in the 64th minute when a cross found Jess Gargan on the far post and she put it home.  City tried to get back into the game but were unable to get the goal despite close efforts from Saoirse Noonan in the 70th minute and injury time and the game finished 3-2 to Shelbourne.

Cork City face Shelbourne again next Sunday 15th of September as they host them at Bishopstown with a 2pm kick off.
