Cork City fell to a 4-0 defeat in their latest Só Hotels Women’s National League game at Bishopstown on Sunday.
Shelbourne started the stronger of the two sides and took the lead in the 7th minute after they were awarded a penalty, Noelle Murray stepped up and put away the resulting penalty kick to give Shelbourne an early 1-0 lead. City tried to get back into the game and came close in the 15th minute after a good work down the right flank between Christina Dring and Zara Foley set up Eabha O’Mahony coming in from the left flank but her shot was blocked by good defending by the Shelbourne team.
City continued to try and get back into the game but neither side were able to create much in the way of real chances with City’s best chance coming late in the first half in the 43rd minute when Sophie Liston with a great cross into the penalty box set up Christina Dring who headed just over the crossbar and the first half ended 1-0 to Shelbourne.
Shelbourne took complete control of the second half and were awarded another penalty in the 47th minute which Noelle Murray again stepped up to take and put away to give Shelbourne a 2-0 lead. Shelbourne wrapped up the points in the 58th minute when Mia Dodd struck with a powerful strike from 20 yards to make it 3-0. City looked for a consolation goal and came close late on when Saoirse Noonan set Eabha O’Mahony free but her shot was well saved by the Shelbourne goalkeeper. Shelbourne finished the game with a strike from distance for Noelle Murray wrapping up her hat-trick and the game finished 4-0 to Shelbourne.
Next up for City is a trip to Jackson Park to face DLR Waves on the 21st of September with a 7pm kick off.
