Goals from Rachel O’Regan, Eabha O’Mahony and Saoirse Noonan gave Cork City all three points at Jackson Park on Saturday as they beat DLR Waves 3-1 in the Só Hotels Women’s National League.
Waves started the stronger of the two sides and had early chances from Orla Casey and Sophie O’Donoghue but City took the lead in the 16th minute as Waves failed to clear their defensive line allowing Rachel O’Regan to get on the ball and score from close range to give City an early 1-0 lead.
City almost made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute as Christina Dring was played in but her shot on goal was well saved by Sophie Lenehan. City made it 2-0 on 32 minutes when Eabha O’Mahony put a free kick straight into the top corner and the half finished 2-0 to City.
City came out in the second half strongly and had chances from Eabha O’Mahony with a long range effort well saved by Lenehan in the 55th minute and a spectacular overhead effort from Saoirse Noonan which was just cleared off the line in the 68th minute. Eadaoin Lyons replaced Rachel O’Regan in the 78th minute and had an immediate impact when her first touch was a cross to Saoirse Noonan who put away the chance with a good strike to make it 3-0 to City. Waves immediately responded with a goal from Kerri Letmon to make it 3-1 but struggled to create chances in the rest of the game and it finished 3-1 to City.
