Cork City came from behind thanks to goals from Katie McCarthy and Saoirse Noonan to win 3-2 against Limerick WFC at Markets Field in their latest Só Hotel’s Women’s National League match on Sunday.
Limerick started the brighter of the two sides and took advantage of this in the 7th minute when Shannon Parbat found Aoife Horgan who put it away to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. They nearly doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Limerick had the ball in the back of the net only for it to be disallowed for offside. City took advantage of this let off and equalised through Katie McCarthy when she finished from close range to make it 1-1 at half time.
The second half was an even affair for much of it with both sides having chances with Limerick coming closest when Sylvia Gee struck the crossbar with an effort. City brought on Ciara McNamara, Danielle Burke and Christina Dring in an effort to get the win and were rewarded for their efforts in the 74th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Saoirse Noonan stepped up and put away the penalty to give City a 2-1 lead.
Limerick got a late equaliser when Aoife Horgan got her second goal in the 83rd minute after being played in by Shauna Rooney making it 2-2. That late goal seemed enough to share the points until deep in injury time City were awarded a second penalty. Noonan again stepped up and made no mistake making it 3-2 at full time and City all three points.
