Cork City FC are delighted to announce that Alec Byrne has signed a new contract to remain at the club for the 2020 season.
The midfielder arrived at the club in 2015 and featured prominently in the Under 17 & 19 sides before graduating to the first team in 2017. After spending most of the last two years sidelined with injuries, he finally broke into the starting eleven towards the tail end of the 2019 season and is now looking forward to cementing his place in midfield and hopes to feature prominently for Neale Fenn’s side in 2020.
Speaking to CCFC.ie this evening, Byrne said: “I’m delighted to get signed back. I can’t wait to get going in pre-season in the next few weeks. I’ve been here as long as I can remember, since the under 17s, and I’ve progressed all the way up. The way Neale wants us to play suits my style down to the ground. I like getting on the ball and I base my game on the technical side, and I think the young, fearless players that he has brought in won’t be afraid to get on the ball so we will hopefully play a nice style of football. I want to play as many games as possible, but as a collective, we need to go back up the table to where we belong.”
City boss Neale Fenn was delighted to retain the services of the 20-year-old, highlighting the impact he made in the final few games of the 2019 season: “We’re really happy to have Alec back. He played a big part at the end of the season. He was an integral part of our midfield, so I’m delighted that he’s signed back and I look forward to working with him again.”
“He played in some big games towards the end of last season. I thought he was outstanding in the UCD & Dundalk games at home, I’m sure that if he knuckles down and has a good pre-season he’ll play a big part for us.”
