Cork City FC are excited to announce the signing of Carys Johnson for our Só Hotels Women’s National League squad.
The 24-year-old brings strong experience to the Cork City side. She has represented Ireland at various levels – schools, U17 and U19. This will be her third season in the National League after previously playing and captaining Limerick FC, and she will join up with the squad for the start of pre-season this weekend.
Speaking to CCFC.ie after joining Cork City, Johnson expressed her excitement at joining City, and looked back fondly on her time at Limerick: “ “My first experience in the National League was with Limerick. I played with a great group of girls there and there was a real family atmosphere. I’ve been asked to play here on a few occasions over the years since the Cork City women’s team was formed, it was never right at the time. To finally get going is great, having played in the emerging talent programs and with Cork clubs all the way up, it’s nice to represent Cork City now”. Johnson who teaches locally in Glanmire Community School added “It’s a young squad here and I’ll be able to bring experience from different teams I’ve played with.”
City women’s manager Rónán Collins is delighted to add Carys Johnson to the 2020 squad with the first game of the season a little bit more than a month and a half away. “Carys is going to bring a lot to the squad both as a player and person” he said. “Carys is coming in as a center-back, we like our defenders to be comfortable in possession and she’s already proven herself that in this league having previously played further up the pitch both in midfield and up top. We first saw her playing as a striker where her technical ability proved a real asset holding the ball up and bring others into play. Not only is she good with her feet but she brings a big aerial presence, good positional discipline and strong defensive capacities. Her different playing experiences are going to aid the squad along with her strong character”.
