WNL: City 0-1 DLR Waves
Cork City fell to a 1-0 defeat against DLR Waves on Saturday at Turner’s Cross in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League match. The early part of the first half saw DLR have much of the possession and territory and possession and pressed the City defence hard but were unable to really test Abby McCarthy in the City goal with a clear-cut effort. City however proved dangerous on the counter attack nearly taking the lead with their best effort coming in the 13th minute coming when after a good run down the left wing, Lauren Egbuloniu cut inside and had an effort on goal that was well gathered by Eve Badana in the DLR goal. DLR took the lead in the 27th minute after they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area which Jess Gleeson steeped up and put straight into the bottom left corner of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the first half continued in the same pattern as the rest of it had been with DLR pressing the City defence high but struggling to create chances. City came close to levelling the game in the 43rd minute after an excellent Shaunagh McCarthy cross found Christina Dring but she couldn’t direct her header and it went wide ending the first half with DLR having a 1-0 lead. The second half saw DLR almost doubling their advantage in the 50th minute when Jess Gleeson again over a free kick rattled the City cross bar but the City defence were able to gather and clear the danger. City again came close in the 64th minute when Shaunagh McCarthy picked out Lauren Egbuloniu in the DLR penalty area and her headed effort went just over the bar. City pressed more and more for an equaliser however they struggled to create more than half chances with Egbuloniu coming close again from an Eva Mangan corner and DLR Waves saw out the remainder of the game to claim a 1-0 victory.
