WU17 & WU19 Preview

It’s a Munster Derby for Jess Lawton’s WU17 side as they travel to Pike Rovers FC, Limerick to take on Treaty United at 2pm Saturday. The previous game between the two teams in Mayfield resulted in a 2-2 draw in a game City dominated, second half goals coming from Grace Flanagan and Heidi Mackin and Jess expects another good competition this weekend “both teams always show up and it’s always a good friendly competition. We do need to be a bit more aggressive on our play and certainly the Elite Phase hasn’t clicked for us yet, but we just need to stick together and keep working. We’ve had a couple of really good performances in the last two games, we just need results to follow.”

Goals had been a concern but Jess will hope that three second half goals in last weekend’s game against Athlone will continue, despite losing that game 4-3. “we were 4-0 down at half time, but we shouldn’t have been in my opinion. We saw two of their goals as offside, but I can’t be too critical of the referee who’s the only person there, making these calls without anyone on the line to support. It’s frustrating when you work so hard in training all week, but we felt sorry for ourselves in the first half instead of rallying. We had a good chat at half time and scored 3 in the second half, so we want to keep that momentum up now.”

The WU19s were off last weekend and return to action away to Shelbourne on Sunday, 2pm at the AUL. “We’re looking forward to it” says Lawton “Shels are a very good side but we know that when we have our core group together with us, like against DLR Waves recently and Peamount, that we can put it up to any team. We’re a little unsettled at the moment, but all for positive reasons because so many of the girls are getting opportunities with the Senior Side, which is brilliant to see as that’s what this league is all about.”
