Two goals in the opening ten minutes gave Limerick a 2-1 win over Cork City at the Market’s Field tonight.

City started the game brightly and Kieran Sadlier saw his effort cleared at close range with barely a minute on the clock. From the resulting corner, Sheppard had a header scrambled away. Despite City’s good start, they found themselves behind on 7 minutes as a mix-up at the back saw Tosi nip in to lob McNulty and put the home side ahead.

City had barely had a chance to look for a way back into the tie when Limerick doubled their lead. After his side won a free kick just outside the box, Shane Tracey stepped up to fire a superb free kick into the top corner to make it 2-0.

City responded within five minutes when Kieran Sadlier thumped a header to the back of the net to get John Caulfield’s side back into the game.

The game was an open one at this point, with both teams attacking when the chance arose and neither defence looking entirely convincing. Sadlier looked set to claim a second when Williams found him with a superb cross field ball 8 minutes before the break but he was unable to find a way past Clarke and City were unable to make the resulting corner count.

Caulfield made a change at the break, with Beattie being replaced by Buckley and the substitute nearly made an instant impact when he cut in from the left only to see Clarke push his shot away. Karl Sheppard then found his way into the box down the right but he could only find the side netting with his shot.

At this point, City had Limerick under pressure and were winning corner after corner, but they just could not engineer a way past Clarke. Sadlier looked like he would surely level it with ten minutes remaining, as Sheppard’s cross found him at the back post but a Limerick defender somehow managed to block his goalbound effort.

City continued to press but they simply could not find the equaliser they sought and Limerick hung on to claim three vital points.
