Recap

Second half goals from the debuting Savannah McCarthy and Saoirse Noonan gave Cork City the perfect start to the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League season as they beat Galway 2-0 at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Manager Frank Kelleher gave three of his new signings Savannah McCarthy, Hannah Donoghue and Michelle O’Driscoll their first start for the club and City almost got their season off to the dream start inside 5 minutes as Saoirse Noonan attempted an overhead kick from a long throw into the Galway box but her effort went just to the left of the Galway goal.

Christina Dring almost scored the opening goal as she was played through by new signing Michelle O’Driscoll but Galway goalkeeper Tina Hughes was able to smother the ball to deny her the chance. Saoirse Noonan had another chance to get her first goal of the season on 35 minutes as she had an effort from 30 yards out which again was well saved by Tina Hughes.

Danielle Burke replaced Clare Shine for the second half. Savannah McCarthy made it a dream debut for her as she scored a wonderful goal from 35 yards out to give City the 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute. City doubled their lead in the 64th minute as after a Galway foul inside the box the referee awarded Cork City WFC a penalty which Saoirse Noonan stepped up to make it 2-0.

That goal ended the game as a contest as the City defence were able to absorb what little in the way of threat Galway had throughout the rest of the game bringing on Eadaoin Lyons on 68 replacing Hannah Donoghue and Kate O’Donovan for Michelle O’Driscoll. The game ended 2-0 City as they travel back with all three points. Next up for City is a Munster Derby as they host Limerick WFC next Sunday 18th of March with a 2pm kick off.
