Cork City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wexford Youth’s today at Ferrycarrig Park in the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League.

The game’s only goal came in the second minute as City got off to the worst possible start as a good team move gave Aisling Frawley the opportunity to put it away past Amanda Budden. City almost got the equaliser shortly after as a Saoirse Noonan free kick had to be tipped over the crossbar by Sophie Lenehan in the Wexford goal.

Wexford were denied a second goal by the assistant’s flag as they had the ball in the back of the net but was ruled out for offside in the 15th minute. City had claims for a penalty in the 27th minute but the referee dismissed their appeals. Kylie Murphy forced a great save from City keeper Amanda Budden on the half hour mark as she managed to tip the shot from distance over the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0. Michelle O’Driscoll had an effort which came close near the end of the half but her effort was just wide of the Wexford goal.

City continued to try and get back into the game in the second half and Saoirse Noonan’s effort on the hour mark came close after some good work by Christina Dring but Lenehan was again on hand to make the save. Dring came close in the 76th minute but her effort was cleared by the Wexford defence. That chance proved to be the last real chance of note in the game and it finished 1-0 to Wexford Youths WFC.
