Cork City returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Galway thanks to a Saoirse Noonan hat-trick on Sunday in the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League at Bishopstown.

City got off to a perfect start in the second minute as a Nathalie O’Brien free kick left of the Galway’s penalty area found the head of Saoirse Noonan who put it away to give City the lead. Galway started to get into the game and on the 15th minute came close thanks to an Aislinn Meaney shot which forced City goalkeeper Amanda Budden to tip the shot onto the crossbar to keep City’s lead.

Galway equalised in the 25th minute through a corner which after a scramble in the box found its way to Lucia Lobato who put it away to make it 1-1. City had two excellent chances to retake the lead in quick succession, first in the 37th minute as Christina Dring forced Galway goalkeeper Tina Hughes into a good save. Then in the 38th minute Michelle O’Driscoll came agonisingly close after some good build-up play from Saoirse Noonan and Katie McCarthy but her effort went just to the left of the Galway goal. O’Driscoll came close again on the cusp of half time but Tina Hughes was again on hand to deny City.

Hannah O’Donoghue and Danielle Sheehy replaced Nathalie O’Brien and Katie McCarthy for the second half. Saoirse Noonan came very close to retaking the lead as she teed herself up on the edge of the Galway box but her shot drifted inches wide of the post. Noonan again came close in the 67th minute as a Maggie Duncliffe free kick found her in the box but her effort was just over the crossbar.

City retook the lead in the 70th minute as Saoirse Noonan was fouled inside the Galway penalty area and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Noonan stepped up and sent her shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to give City a 2-1 lead. City were awarded another penalty less than 10 minutes later after Christina Dring was taken down inside the Galway penalty area. Noonan again stepped up and sent her penalty kick to the same spot as the last to seal her hat-trick and all three points for City as the game finished 3-1.

City travel to Markets Field next Sunday 27th of May to face Limerick with a 2pm kick off.
