Cork City returned to action after the summer break with a 1-1 draw away to UCD Waves at Jackson Park in the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League.

The first half was a tight half with few real chances for either side. For City the closest chances came from Eadaoin Lyons who with the first chance for City with an effort from distance but Erica Turner was alert to get down and stop the chance.

Katie McCarthy was almost through on goal in the 25th minute but a heavy first touch meant the chance never materialised. Saoirse Noonan appeared to be fouled in the box but the referee waved away City appeals for a penalty kick. At the other end Eve Badana was down sharply to save an effort while near half time Sophie O’Donoghue had a half chance but she misconnected with her effort and it came to nothing.

Danielle Burke came close to scoring early in the second half as she received a great ball over the top but the ball ran away from her and UCD goalkeeper Erica Turner was able to smother the chance. A mix up in the City defence let Leanne Payne in to give UCD a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

On 73 City equalised as Katie McCarthy beat the offside trap and coolly finished past Turner to make it 1-1. This set up City to try and get the winner and they came close in the last 10 minutes of the game. Maggie Duncliffe had a thundering effort from distance which was tipped over the bar. Christina Dring sent Saoirse Noonan through on goal but she was unable to beat the goalkeeper. And in injury time Saoirse Noonan sent in a great cross for Katie McCarthy but her shot went over the crossbar and the game finished 1-1.
