Recap

Cork City and UCD Waves played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with goals from Katie McCarthy and Saoirse Noonan on Sunday at Bishopstown in their latest Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League game.

City started the brighter of the two sides with an early chance to take the lead in the 3rd minute, Eabh O’Mahony with an effort from the edge of the box just going over the bar. Danielle Burke also came close in the 9th minute also just over the bar with an effort from the edge of the box.

City took the lead in the 15th minute; Ciara McNamara sent a great pass for Saoirse Noonan to run onto on the right wing, she brought it to the edge of the penalty area and sent a cross into Katie McCarthy who took control and placed the ball into the bottom right corner to give City a 1-0 lead. City’s lead didn’t last long as in the 17th minute Sinead Gaynor scored a free kick beating Eve Badana in the City goal.

City continued to dominate the rest of the half having most of the possession of the ball and putting the UCD defence under pressure, Eadaoin Lyons came close after she was set up by Eabh O’Mahony but her half voley was just off target. Saoirse Noonan also tested Erica Turner in the UCD goal in the 45th minute but her effort was right at Turner who was able to make to the save.

The second half began much as the first half ended with City having the majority of poession and putting pressure on the UCD defence. Turner was forced into a good save to keep a Saoirse Noonan effort out while in the 60th minute after some good link up play between Noonan and Danielle Burke set up Katie McCarthy coming in from the right into the box but her effort was stopped by the feet of Turner.

UCD took the lead in the 70th minute catching City on the counter attack, Niama Chemaou struck an effort which rebounded off the crossbar and appeared to bounce in off a City player in the ensuing goalmouth scramble. Hannah O’Donoghue came close to equalising for City in the 78th with a great run on the left wing into the penalty area but her effort went just to the right of the UCD goal.

City managed to level the game in the 80th minute as a through ball took a deflection off a UCD defender and fell to Saoirse Noonan who calmly put it home to make it 2-2. City contined to press for a winner but were unable to create any clear cut chances and the game finished 2-2.
