FAI Cup holders Cork City are safely into the quarter-finals of this year’s competition as they saw off Maynooth University Town at Turner’s Cross tonight.
While the Rebel Army took time to settle, Aaron Barry’s goal just before the half-hour mark put them into a lead that never looked like being relinquished and the advantage was buttressed with three more goals in the second half.
With what was City’s first real chance, Barry netted a header from Barry McNamee’s corner on 28 minutes and but for good saves from David Sterio – denying McNamee and Gearóid Morrissey – the lead would have been greater at half-time.
Kieran Sadlier had the second goal soon after the restart and, though FAI Intermediate Cup holders Maynooth might have got a goal back immediately, Darragh Reynor heading straight at Peter Cherrie from Eoin McDermott’s cross.
Immediately after that, Josh O’Hanlon made it 3-0 from a penalty on 67, having been fouled himself, Ronan Coughlan completed the scoring for the Rebel Army, turning in sub Ronan Hurley’s cross.
