First half goals from Hannah O’Donoghue and Saoirse Noonan was enough for Cork City to secure progress to the semi-final of the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League Development Shield on this evening at Bishopstown.

City started the game much the brighter with an early effort from Eadaoin Lyons saved after she was played in by Hannah O’Donoghue. City took the lead in the 5th minute as Danielle Burke played an excellent through ball for Hannah O’Donoghue to run onto and her shot was placed into the corner of the goal to give City an early 1-0 lead. Limerick had two chances to equalise through Rebecca Horgan however City goalkeeper Eve Badana was able to save both efforts.

At the other end City continued to put pressure on the Limerick goal, Kate O’Donovan had an effort from the edge of the box which went just wide while Katie McCarthy after being set up by Eadaoin Lyons saw her effort cannon back off the crossbar. City took a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute as a Maggie Duncliffe corner found the head of Saoirse Noonan who put it into the net with a powerful header.

City started the second half in a bright fashion with Saoirse Noonan coming close from a Nathalie O’Brien free kick but her effort went just wide. City brought on Christina Dring for Hannah O’Donoghue and Dring was into the action quickly setting up Saoirse Noonan for a chance which went wide.

Limerick got back into the game in the 65th minute as they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Marie Curtin to make the game 2-1. City continued to press for a third goal and had efforts through Christina Dring from a narrow angle which was saved while Saoirse Noonan’s effort from 20 yards went wide. At the other end Eve Badana had to make an excellent save to tip a Rebecca Horgan effort over the bar to keep City’s slender advantage and the game finished 2-1 with City progressing to the semi-final.
