Cork City FC are pleased to announce that Barry Coffey has signed back with the club for the 2024 season.
The 22-year-old has made over 70 appearances for the club since signing on loan from Celtic in 2021 and was City’s top scorer in 2022 with 14 league goals as they won the First Division title that year.
Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, the midfielder said: “I am very pleased to have signed a new contract with the club and can’t wait to get started in the New Year. Since the day I first signed for the club, I was made to feel very welcome by the fans and they have always had my back. Last year, I feel like I didn’t justify that love and support with my performances on the field, and I want to rectify that. I know how much people are hurting after last year, so now it is my time to repay that support by putting the right kind performances in next season.”
“I have spoken to Tim and I know how much he wants this club to get promoted, just as I do and just as the supporters do too. This is a big club with fantastic supporters and we know that they want a team that they can identify with and get behind. I just want to get back in now for pre-season training and to build towards the start of the season. It is important for us all to put the hard work in now over the coming weeks to be ready for the season ahead.”
City boss Tim Clancy welcomed Coffey’s re-signing, saying: “I am delighted to get Barry back for next year. After a difficult year for everyone last year, we are hoping Barry can be back to his best again next year, like he was when he was a key part of the team that got promoted in 2022. He was the top scorer for the club that season, so we are looking for more of the same again in 2024.
“As I have said previously, I want players here who want to play for this club and, from my conversations with Barry, he is a guy who has shown me his desire to play for City and get us back where we belong.”
