WNL: Bohemians 2-0 CCFC

Cork City fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Oscar Traynor Centre against Bohemians FC in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game on Saturday.

The first half was a quiet affair with both sides struggling to create chances. Bohemians had much of the possession and territory but failed to create any chances of real note thanks to a resolute City defence. At the other end City also struggled to create meaningful chances until late in the first half as Christina Dring forced a fingertip save from the hosts goalkeeper with a headed effort from close range and the first half finished 0-0.

The start of the second was a much livelier affair with the referee awarding penalties to both sides early in the half. Bohemians were awarded the first penalty in the 50th minute, Erica Burke stepped up and converted the spot kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. However City almost got back into the game immediately from the kick off as they attacked up the field and were awarded a penalty of their own after a foul on Laura Shine. Becky Cassin stepped up but her effort was saved by the Bohemians goalkeeper.

Bohemians would continue the rest of the second half much in the fashion of the first dominating possession and territory but struggling to create real chances. They came close in the 54th minute with a free kick at the edge of the box but it was straight at Abby McCarthy who saved it comfortably.

City continued to try and get back into the game but struggled to create chances of any note. Bohemians finished off the game in the 84th minute as Lisa Murphy made a run up the right wing for the hosts and struck from distance to make it 2-0 which it finished.

Cork City are back in action at Turner’s Cross on the 25th of September as they host DLR Waves in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off.
