Cork City fell to a 2-0 defeat at Turner’s Cross against Galway WFC in the last SSE Airtricity Women’s National League before the mid-season break.
Galway had the early advantage with efforts on goal inside the opening five minutes which Abby McCarthy did well to stop. While City had their own share of possession and territory they struggled to create clear cut chances despite good play by Eabha O’Mahony and Lauren Egbuloniu.
Galway made the breakthrough in the 22nd minute when Chloe Maloney got her head on a Galway corner and put it away with a fine header. They quickly doubled their advantage as a few minutes later Aoife Thompson got on the end of a fine cross from Shauna Brennan to make it 2-0 to the visitors.
City tried to get back into the game and came close with a good run from Sophie Liston but the effort was blocked and the first half ended 2-0 to Galway. The second half was a quieter affair with neither side creating much in the way of clear cut chances. City had the majority of possession and territory while being unable to create much in the way of clear cut chances. City’s chances were further reduced in the 80th minute as Becky Cassin had to go off injured after City had already used all their substitutions.
City did come close to a goal back late in the game as Kelly Leahy had an effort from distance saved while Laura Shine came very close after a good cross from Lauren Singleton found her but her effort on goal was well saved and cleared by the Galway defence and the game finished 2-0 to Galway.
City are next in action on the 26th of June as they visit Tolka Park to play Shelbourne in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off.
