WNL: CCFC 2-1 Galway
Cork City finished their 2020 Women’s National League campaign with a 2-1 win against Galway WFC at Bishopstown thanks to a Saoirse Noonan brace. City started out the stronger side in a tentative game having the first real effort on goal with Sophie Liston setting Eabha O’Mahony for an effort on goal but her shot couldn’t find the target. Saoirse Noonan also came close in the early stages spinning past a defender before attempting to lob Amanda Budden in the Galway goal but her effort was just over the bar. Noonan opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she got the ball on the left wing and dribbling towards the penalty area chipped the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to City. City doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Eabha O’Mahony was fouled on the edge of the penalty area giving City a free kick, Noonan stepped up a curled the free around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-0 to City. The second half was a quieter affair with few chances for either side. For City second half substitute Shaunagh McCarthy set up Laura Shine in the 74th minute but her effort was blocked. McCarthy was again involved a few minutes later with a good run down the left wing cutting inside but her shot on goal was well saved. Galway pulled a goal back in the 89th minute with Aoife Thompson applying the finish to a quick counter attack but it was only a consolation goal and it finished 2-1 to Cork City. Cork City’s final game of the 2020 season will be the FAI Cup final against Peamount United which will be held at the Tallaght Stadium with a 3.15pm kick off and will be live on RTÉ 2.
