Cork City played out a 2-2 draw with Wexford Youths in their latest Women’s National League match on Sunday with goals from Lauren Egbuloniu and Katie McCarthy
City got off to the perfect start when an attack from the kick off saw Saoirse Noonan put a cross in from the left wing which found Lauren Egbuloniu at the near post who bundled the ball home to give City the perfect start. City continued to press and Egbuloniu was again close with a good run down the right wing into the penalty area seeing her effort go just wide.
Wexford were reduced to 10 on the half hour mark when Orlaith Conlon was shown a red card after she took down Lauren Egbuloniu at the edge of the box when she looked to be clear for a shot on goal. At the other end Wexford came close with an effort hitting the post and City having to scramble away the rebound. City continued to press for a second but efforts from Eabha O’Mahony and Christina Dring were well saved.
The second half saw a drastic improvement from Wexford as the pressed the City team and were rewarded in the 49th minute when Blessing Kinglsey on the right wing found fellow second half substitute Kira Bates Crosbie at the near post who put it away to make it 1-1. Neither side could muster much in the way of clear cut efforts for much of the second half. Saoirse Noonan came close in the 71st effort with an effort from the edge of the box just tipped over.
Wexford took the lead in the 81st minute when Wexford pounced on a mix up in the City defence to gain possession deep in the City half, the ball was played through for Aisling Frawley who finished it to make it 2-1 to Wexford.
City tried to immediately respond when Katie McCarthy played in Lauren Egbuloniu but her shot on goal was well saved. City rescued the point in the 90th minute when a slip by a Wexford player saw the ball fall to Katie McCarthy who chipped it home from just outside the box and it finished 2-2.
