WNL: CCFC 2-3 Treaty United
Cork City fell to a 3-2 defeat at Turners Cross against Treaty United on Saturday in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League. City started the stronger of the two sides and tested the Treaty goal with efforts from Lauren Singleton and Laura Shine coming close in the opening 15 minutes. Treaty United took the lead in the 17th minute as Aoife Horgan got the ball to Rachel Horgan who chipped the ball into the net from the edge of the box to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Treaty began to assert themselves in the game pushing the City defence back without really testing Abby McCarthy. City got the equaliser on the half hour mark with Sarah McKevitt scoring with a great strike from distance right into the top right corner of the net. However Treaty retook the lead in the 36th minute as Michaela Mitchell in the Treaty goal sent the ball long and allowed Rebecca Horgan to run onto the ball and behind the City defence and put it away to give them a 2-1 lead at half time. The second half began with City pushing the Treaty defence back and came close with a Laura Shine effort as she got in behind the Treaty defence but her effort was well saved by Mitchell in the Treaty goal. City came even closer on the hour mark as an Eabha O’Mahony free kick was met by the head of Becky Cassin but her headed effort at goal was well saved. Treaty increased their lead in the 66th minute as Gillian Keenan made a fantastic solo run down the left wing cutting inside to the penalty area and finishing into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. City continued to try and get back into the game and appeared to set up a grand stand finish after they were awarded a penalty in injury time which Becky Cassin put away but Treaty saw out the game and it finished 3-2 to the visitors. City are back in action at Turners Cross in two weeks on June 5th as they host Galway WFC with a 2pm kick off. Cork City: Abby McCarthy, Lauren Walsh (Shaunagh McCarthy 45’), Ciara McNamara, Danielle Burke (Riona Crowley 20’), Lauren Singleton (Lauren Egbuloniu 72’), Eabha O’Mahony, Becky Cassin, Eva Mangan (Katie McCarthy 59’), Sarah McKevitt, Laura Shine (Sophie Liston 59), Christina Dring
