WNL: City 0-3 DLR Waves

Cork City fell to a 3-0 defeat against DLR Waves in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game at Turner’s Cross on Saturday.

After a cagey opening where neither side could create much in the way of clear cut chances on goal DLR were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute after the referee awarded them a penalty for a foul on Nadine Clare. Kate Mooney stepped up to take the spot kick and sent City goalkeeper Maria O’Sullivan the wrong way to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

DLR began to control the game after that coming close on several occasions with the best chances coming in the 29th minute as a Sophie Watters free kick into the penalty area ultimately fell to Avril Brierley but her effort went just wide of the goal. Brierley was also involved in another close call as she set up Kate Mooney in the penalty area but the effort was just wide of the goal.

The DLR pressure told in the 42nd minute as a short corner was sent in across the mouth of the goal and after a scramble inside the six yard box Sophie Watters managed to get the final touch and give the visitors a 2-0 lead at half time.

The second half was a more even affair as City looked to get back into the game but a stubborn DLR defence kept clear cut chances to a minimum. City’s best opportunity came through a Lauren Singleton effort from distance that DLR goalkeeper Eve Badana managed to get across goal to put out for a corner. Chances continued to be few and far between for either side until injury time where Mia Dodds took advantage of a mix-up in the City defence to score from close range to make it 3-0 to DLR at full time.

Cork City are back in action next Saturday 30th of July as they travel to Dalymount Park to play Bohemians in theSSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off.
