WNL: Cork City 2-0 Athlone Town
Cork City made it three wins in a row beating Athlone Town 2-0 at Bishopstown on Sunday in their latest Women’s National League game. In a competitive first half Athlone came close with a few dangerous crosses into the City penalty area but City goalkeeper Maria O’Sullivan was on hand to snuff out the danger. At the other end Saoirse Noonan came agonisingly close from 25 yards striking the crossbar with Christina Dring only able to put the rebound wide. Athlone continued to pressure the City defence hitting the post themselves in the 17th minute and having a free kick go just over the bar in the 26th minute. City grew in dominance as the half went on with Noonan again hitting the woodwork with a cross in the 27th minute and in the 31st minute she found Christina Dring with an excellent through ball but Drings shot was well saved. Becky Cassin also came close with an effort going just over the bar after she was set up by Sophie Liston but the breakthrough finally came in the dying moments of the first half with Lauren Egbuloniu striking to make it 1-0 to Cork City at half time. In a quieter second half City continued to have much of the ball with Christina Dring having an effort well saved after she was set up by an excellent Sophie Liston pass. City made it 2-0 in the 65th minute when Saoirse Noonan struck a shot into the net from 30 yards out. City had more chances to make it 3-0 with Sophie Liston having a shot saved in the 80th minute and Noonan with an effort just wide in the 89th minute but it finished 2-0 to City.
