WNL: DLR Waves 1-0 City

Cork City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the UCD Bowl against DLR Waves in their latest SSE Airtiricty Women’s National League.

City started the stronger of the two sides and nearly had an early goal when Shaunagh McCarthy sent Sarah McKevitt whose effort was blocked, it fell to Christina Dring whose shot went over. McKevitt again came close in the 17th minute with a strong strike from distance which was well saved by Eve Badana in the DLR Waves goal.

McKevitt came close again in the 27th minute with a header having to be saved by Badana to keep the sides level. Both sides went back and forth in attacking for the remainder of the first half but neither side could find the breakthrough and the score remained 0-0 at half time.

City started the second half strong with Sophie Liston coming close with an effort just wide after a good cross from Sarah McKevitt. McKevitt struck a shot in the 58th minute from the edge of the box which rebounded off the post. The hosts had their own chances however with Shauna Carroll struck a great shot from 25 yards out which was tipped onto the post by Abby McCarthy in the City goal.

Eva Mangan came close with an effort in the 71st minute with an effort from the edge of the box which went just over the bar. Eabha O’Mahony came agonisingly close on the counter attack for City with a shot from 25 yards just missing the top corner of the net. When it seemed like the points would be shared DLR scored the winning goal with Ciara Maher hit a great strike from distance and it was enough to give DLR all three points as it finished 1-0.

City are back in action at Turner’s Cross next Saturday 17th of July in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League as they host Athlone Town with a 2pm kick off.

Cork City: Abby McCarthy, Lauren Walsh, Leah Murphy, Ciara McNamara, Shaunagh McCarthy, Becky Cassin, Eabha O’Mahony, Eva Mangan, Sophie Liston, Sarah McKevitt, Christina Dring (Lauren Singleton 85’)
